Distinguish existing structure in remodel

I'm using HD Pro 2014 to design the addition of a second floor to an existing house. This new floor is not a full second floor, it just covers a portion of the existing structure. Also the area on the first floor beneath the new floor is being reconfigured. The rest of the house will be unchanged. In the drawings I will submit to the county building department I want to clearly differentiate the new/changed portions of the house from the areas that are unchanged. how can I best do this? It seems to me that one way to do this is to change the fill style of the new walls, to set it to a different color. Will this work? Is there a better way.

The way I always do remodeling projects is to make a relationally correct model of the structure as it is (as built) and then "save as" a copy of the as-built and rename it version one etc. then take that copy and apply the changes that are intended. Then when I make construction documents, I can show the as-built and the remodeling versions.

In terms of demo-walls, I often show what walls are to be removed in the as-built, with different wall fills and annotation text so then the plans show the existing structure with annotations as to intended changes and the "version one" instance to show what is intended as the final result. I have found this quite workable for many years relative to remodeling projects.

Something like this came up a little while ago. You can get the
results you want using Build / Wall / Hatch Wall. You can break
the walls where ever you want the hatch to change and the hatch
tool will let you select the broken sections. To achieve solid colors
set the "Fill Pattern" to "Solid" and choose your color in the "Wall
Hatch Specification" dbx. In the example I set the default exterior
and interior wall colors to blue and light blue respectively using the
"Wall Specification" dbx. Then I used the Hatch Wall tool to change
the portions of the plan that were proposed to red and light red.

I use both methods .... Rich where is the Hatch Wall Spec. DBX ? maybe only in newer versions ? don't see it in Pro 10... no tool in 10 you just click on the broken section and it auto hatches and you lose all colour that section goes black and white.

Open the the wall spec and look at wall type/define. Then select the correct layer and choose the fill color and pattern.

Thx JoAnn , was just playing with that one but I think it changes ALL the walls Hatching not just the Hatched Walls hatching.... that was a mouthful :)

I always RC on the wall and get the wall spec dbx , never occurred to me till just now to Double Click on the Hatched wall section and there is the Hatched Wall DBX :) as Rich mentioned

done my learning for today I think :)

....nope how to turn it off again ? ..........RC> delete removes only the hatching , not the wall section as I expected.

Hey Mick, here are the steps I use in HDP'14.
If your version has it you just need to select the
auto-hatched portion of the wall and hit the open
object icon. Be sure to tab through the different
selections until you get the "Wall Hatching"
selected. On an exterior wall for example your
first selection is the "Wall" - the second selection
is "Roof Plane Baseline" - then the third selection
is the "Wall Hatching".

Hi Rich, figured it out , in HDPro10 , if you RC>open object you get the normal wall specification instead, however if you double click the hatched portion of the wall you get the Hatched Wall Spec. DBX instead which explains why I never found it before... double clicking is the default way to bring up default settings for most icons but never though to try it on a section of wall in the plan too, I now see it works like that for all walls not just hatched. :rolleyes:
