adding an addition to a colonial

I,m a new user, I built a 26 x 40 2 story colonial. When I try to build a single story addition off the gable end, the exterior walls extend all the way to the roof line unless I build the addition walls in from the exsiting walls. If I move them out to the exisiting walls it redraws the walls up to the roof line.

Try adding breaks to those walls where they intersect with the gable wall of the original structure using the Break Wall tool (Ctrl B).
