Floating dormer over stairway

I have an open stairway that has a railing around it. I would like to place a floating dormer in that area for light however the software considers the railing as a wall and won't let me place the dormer there. How can I correct this?

I am using HD Pro 8,

Just a guess, Build the dormer before the stairs.

I had thought about doing that however I spent a good four hours on the stairs. However, your advice did help because it made me think to move the railing out of the way and move the dormer in place. Then I move the railing back and it worked!!!
