Elevation Cross Section - switch basement off?

    Hi,

Trying to produce B&W line plans for permit submission but having trouble switching off the basement. If I back clip or clip from underneath using the slider I either lose some of the roof or some of the split level floor on one side of the building.

Sorry if that sounds complicated without an image, but simply, is there a way of switching off the basement level so I can send elevations to layout looking like a line diagram as seen from above ground? (which is what my local authority requires) I really don't want to have to mess around in Photoshop or InDesign every time I make a change.

Maybe a white CAD rectangle with no frame to simply hide it in 2D? Bad solution but less clunky than using other software.

    Many thanks.

    Hi Andy,

Export the elevation as a "DXF" file and import it back into a blank elevation view.

You will now be able to edit or delete each line.

    Fast and painless.

Sorry for delay in thanking - thank you! I guess that won't auto update as Layouts can, but is a workaround for final submission once all the messing around with HDP is complete. Can turn off 'walls / foundation' in display settings but that just exposes all the contents of the basement - stairs, gym equipment, etc.

New issue - can't find a way of removing wall finishes on the side elevation (eg brick hatching), which makes the side elevation quite busy, simply want an outline of the building envelope (above ground) and windows/doors.

Aha, '3D / Toggle Low Detail Mode' simplifies things a lot. Note to self: pat on back.

If you take the camera outside the terrain perimeter, that will hide the foundation.
Make sure the terrain is thick enough to cover it..

    Let's try another:

Sent the elevation to Layout and the dialogue only lets me send it as an image (so won't update with the plan?) and won't let me scale it, so it's not the right size on the paper. No idea why.

Oops, should have looked on forum first. Ah well, typed it now.

    Hi Allen,

    Thanks for that.

Don't have 'Layers' in HDP, not as I / Photoshop, etc, etc understand them anyway

Put the camera outside the terrain perimeter but didn't make any difference. Not sure about making a terrain thick, will look into that now.

Ok, having now read the manual (!), can see that the cross section/elevation camera has to be dragged more than a snap distance but not so far as to cross a 3D object (eg wall), then it allows me to send to Layout as more than just an image, i.e. something I can set scale for.

    Except...

...when I view it as a Technical Illustration (what I want), then of course I can't set the scale when I send it to Layout, oh no, that would be far too easy.

    Help!!

    Hi Sydney
    A trick from Chief Talk.
Send one you can at scale, then send the other view and size it to match..

    Allen,

thanks, yes that's how I realised it wasn't sending it at the correct scale.

Not ideal but a practical workaround. Think I might go with that for now, these are plans for planning permission, not blueprints for scaling and building off. By zooming in I can get it pretty spot on anyway.

(Surprised that is necessary in Chief - I sometimes think of upgrading in the belief all my problems will disappear! I know that's an illusion but it's a nice dream)

    Hi Sydney,

Sending elevations to DXF and then importing back into an elevation is certainly the fastest way to create custom wall sections, for example. You can delete multiple items at on time. You can edit each individual line. Check Sample Drawing A8 on my site. All the sections were custom drawn from standard details.

Wo! How many weeks did A8 take?! I find it takes a few seconds of processor thinking just to add a line of text in HDP.

Impressive, but for the moment I'm more interested in A5 and A6 - what steps did you take to achieve that into layout? Did you get a Tech Illustration of an elevation camera and then export that to DXF, then import with Layout? And how do you make sure it is to scale 1:50, or 1:100 or whatever is needed? I guess I could spend a day working out the routine, but I have spent soooo many days and nights on this software/my plans now (attempting what 3 pro architects told me was not possible) - if you have the routine memorised, could you maybe detail the steps for me if you have a moment?

    Many thanks.
