    Spokane green roofing options

Think there’s only one option when it comes to choosing roofing materials for your home? Think again. As people have become more cost and energy conscious, construction companies have branched out and come up with alternative ways to build residential roofs besides the traditional asphalt shingles. Are you ready for a remodel or considering constructing a new house? Here are some green roofing options for you to consider.

    Coated metal

One option to consider is metal roofing coated in granite so it looks just like asphalt shingles. According to Ed Lynch and Mickey Harris, contractors with the home remodeling company Nescor out of West Springfield, MA, “They [the metal roofs] don’t wear out. They are guaranteed for the lifetime of the homeowner and the guarantee is transferable.” Coated metal roofs are virtually indestructible, 100% recyclable, and will reflect heat instead of absorbing it.

    Light colors

Lighter colored roofs are also known as “cool roofs” because they don’t attract and absorb heat from the sun the way dark asphalt roofs do. According to a study by the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, cool roofs “can save you between 10 and 50 percent on annual cooling costs.”

    Other roofing materials

Another type of material sometimes used is wood shingles, which can be recycled into wood chips and will last 15 to 20 years. Clay roofing is an option for homes in predominantly hot climates. Harris said, “They [clay roofs] can be durable and are recyclable, but are not meant for regions where there are extremes in heat and cold.” The same goes for wood shingles, so you might consider other options when building or remodeling your Spokane roof.

These alternative roofing materials are great for saving money and good for the environment. Spokane homeowners would do well to research their roofing options before building or remodeling their next house.
