Gable exterior attic wall default material
When building a roof over a full gable wall, HD creates exterior attic walls to fill the triangular section under the roof. One would think that the program would look at the wall below, upon which the attic wall rests, and use the materials from that wall to define the attic wall. This doesn't seem to be the case (see attached graphic). How does HD decide what material to use on the attic wall, and how can this be controlled? I would rather not change these attic walls manually each time the roof is regenerated.

It does not think, surmise or notice a flipping thing, it has no intelligence at all what so ever (you supply that).
In your case it would tend to create attic walls based upon the wall below if there is one directly below, and then secondarily what ever wall type is set as the default wall type in "Edit - Default Settings - Walls" and also it tends to follow "Edit - Default Settings - Materials - Exterior Wall" settings.
You control the software by confronting and controlling it via its various settings, if you do not then no one is then in control.
