    distance between objects

Is there a way to specify the distance between objects? I'm using Essentials 2014 and I want to place two pendant lights 30 inches apart from each other. How would I go about doing that?

Try this please, draw an "arrow" found under "Text", draw a second arrow and you will then be able to create a dimension string, manually between the two arrows, you can then extend the dimension string to a wall or cabinet and then place your light fixtures on those located arrow objects.
This is not an opinion, rather I did this using Essentials before posting so you can do it too.

In AutoCAD and other 2-D CAD programs you commonly use natively 2-D objects as dimension points for manual dimension strings for your locational purposes. I opened my copy of your software title and that is what I found to be workable. I do agree that it may seem convoluted but I am interested in workable results, however obtained.
