Under the menu 3D > 3D Settings... > Lighting Options. Reduce your ambient interior lighting (I usually go between 10% - 18% depending on how I intend to light the room)

Jon, if this works for me (and my bleached out, sometimes OVER-shadowed (ghosty/streaky) finals with shadows), this will be the singularly BEST tip I've read/received on lighting adjustments to make to create decent 3D renderings with shadows. I will send you a box of chocolates!
