Ho to build a cabinet soffit

When I try to build a soffit in plan view (Build/cabinet/soffit), I am unable to click on the plan to place a soffit in the room. I get the error message "Cabinet is completely above ceiling or below floor, could not create new cabinet module.

When I try it in 3d view I get that same message or this one "Not enough vertical space, could not create new cabinet module."

I must have something set up wrong in my plan. Any help is appreciated.

I suspect this message is due to having a lower ceiling than the default soffit is configured to work with. If this is true, then go into your Default Settings -> Cabinets -> Soffits and change the values to be more representative of your room and ceiling heights.
