Exterior material showing on interior wall of room with vaulted ceiling

I have a room with a vaulted ceiling. One of the end walls is the lower section of an exterior wall above. In other words, the vault cuts what is an upper story exterior wall. I can't get this interior portion of the wall to show something other than the material of the exterior wall above.



I found a forum thread from almost a year ago about this and following the suggestion there I changed the specification of this wall to set the "Lower wall type if split by butting roof" check box. The wall continues to show the exterior wall material. Any help appreciated.

If you have Architectural or Home Designer Pro you can repair this using the pony-wall tool setting the interior showing part of the wall poly line to an interior type and the portion that shows to the exterior or upper half of the wall to an exterior type. Once drawn the two halves (wall poly-lines) can be shaped in an elevation camera to reveal properly inside and out.

If you do not have those two applications there is no remedy possible other than making a thin triangle using Sketch Up and then importing that shape into Home Designer to mask the interior vault wall surface.

Thanks David. I couldn't use the "hole" technique since there is no lower wall (couldn't extend an interior lower wall upward into a hole in the exterior upper wall), so I tried defining the upper wall as a pony wall. When I opened the wall specification for the upper wall I was reminded that I'd already tried this. I had the upper wall defined as a pony wall with a 6" exterior wall for the upper and a 6" interior wall for the lower. No mater what I did the wall in the LR always showed the exterior material. Just for grins I set the upper wall to be an 6" interior wall and it STILL shows the exterior material, even on the exposed portion of the wall above the roof. See the two attached pictures.



Is there something else I can try?

Since you have Pro you can use the Pony Wall and then manually SHAPE the two resulting Wall Poly Lines to suit your purpose. You cannot get what you want merely by settings and choices, after you have the Pony Wall halves in place (one for the exterior and one half for the interior) you must then manually manipulate the Wall Poly Lines to fit the angles of the roof, inside and out. It requires a little study of pony walls in the reference manual and then applied practice of what you read but can be done, once the process is understood.
