How to deactivate material painter

I'm sure there is a simple answer to this problem: once I activate the material eye dropper or painter, I can't seem to get rid of it. How do I "put it away"?

Select a different tool. The Spacebar on your keyboard is the hotkey for the "Select Objects" tool and the one I use most frequently when I don't want another tool to be active any longer.

Usually hitting the Space Bar turns the selected option off whether a material, cabinet, paint colour whatever....
