loft & deck q's

i am very new to the program. i am currently working on two projects, the first problem has to do with the deck on the front of a single floor home. i am having problems adding steps to the deck so that i can record walkthrough starting with the outside of the home. the second problem has to do with making an open loft on the second floor i keep ending up with a banister in the middle of an open floor. i know this probably at the very beginning level but any help would be appreciated.
