We have had mandatory recycling for years. All newspapers, magazines, circulars, junk mail, cardboard, or paper of any kind goes in one bin. Glass, metal, plastics #1 and 2, and cardboard milk cartons and drink boxes go in another. There's hardly any regular trash left! (I guess that's the idea?)

After working for the County of San Diego in the Purchasing dept, I know that a lot of the recycled bottles and tires are processed to make asphalt; wood by-products are mulched and provided free to city residents but charged to non-incorporated county residents.
