Furniture on Rug

When I try to place furniture on an area rug I keep getting a warning :
"This item cannot be placed onto an appliance, fixture or furniture item".
How do I get around this?

Hi Debbie
Place off to the side and then use the ctrl key while dragging it onto the rug..
