I really do not mean to be a PITA (Pain In The Azimuth) about stairs...

I want a 40" wide area under the stairs and I want them built as a staircase with a small room under them.

That means I really need to have 44-1/2" treads since the 4-1/2" has been pushed the stairs.

In real life, would a 4-1/2" wall (typical 2x4s) actually be built under the stair stringer?

    Mike,

I'm pretty sure that 4-1/2" would be a typical under stair wall.

In these attachments, I have a 1st flr to 2nd flr and a 1st flr to bsmnt set of stairs.

Both have the "Sec Width" at 40" in the "Staircase Specification" dbx.

1st attachment: on 1st flr showing both up and down stairs with a full height wall and a wall pushed under.

2nd attachment: on 1st flr looking down to the bsmnt... notice the rail on the left.

3rd attachment: in bsmnt looking up... notice the rail on the right.

So, I can not have dual (shared stairwell) stairs with the same "Sec Width".

If I want the bsmnt stairs to be 48", then the stairs above would be 52-1/2".

If both walls are pushed under, then the the stairs above would be 57".
