Materials that are listed but won't "apply"

I am trying to design a kicthen with a black/white checkered floor and a brick full-height backsplash. I have found both "materials" in the library, but it won't apply those materials. It will paint it a solid, similar color, but I can't get it to apply the texture or pattern, which is really what I want to see. Any suggestions?

What type of view are you in? If you are in a Cross Section/Elevation, the pattern won't display, only the color will, try taking a Floor Camera view instead. Also, you may want to make sure that you haven't toggled into low detail mode or turned off your textures. To check this, with you camera view open, select the 3D menu and make sure that there is a checkmark next to Toggle Textures and that there is NOT one next to Toggle Low Detail Mode.
