sending drawings

hello,

how do i send drawings to someone NOT using CA? the architect has requested I send a "copy (PDF or similar DWG DXF)".

how does this work? do they open them on their computer or do they have to have them printed at a professional drawing repro shop?

related to this, how do i have my plans printed in large format at a printing shop??
