change the default wall surface?

I have modified the default materials for "Wall Covering" and "Walls (Interior)/Soffits" but all my walls are still showing up as white drywall. When I examine the specifications of a wall, under materials there are options for "Exterior Wall Surface," "Interior Wall Surface," and "Wall Covering."

Even though my "Wall Covering" reflects my updated default choice, the "Wall Surfaces" still show a default selection of "Drywall" so my walls are still displaying as white. I cannot find this setting. Anyone know how to change the default "Wall Surface" material? Otherwise, it looks like I'm going to have to open the properties for each wall and change it manually.

Some changes are global and retroactive and some are not, in Interiors you can only change exterior wall and interior wall materials per wall (there is no global way to do this as in Pro), some of the material settings in in Edit-Default Settings - Materials are global like "Wall Coverings" but others are on a wall by wall - layer by layer basis.
You do what you must to get the local effects you want per room and wall dialog box, materials settings.
