Having trouble printing

I have Home Designer 9.0
i would like to print two ways:
1. i have (some portion of) the plan on screen and i want it printed on 8.5x11
the plan has terrain
If i show just what i want to print on the screen it does not print like that, using the full sheet width for maximum readability.
i want to print as wide as possible on the sheet but so whole plan (top to bottom) also fits.
It becomes a trial and error exercise zooming in/out the screen, moving left/right, changing percentage till it fits
Print Preview does not seem to match what is printed at all.
2. i also want to print to scale where each 1/4 inch is 2 ft, i will have to cut and tape the output printed pages, but i don't want to do the trial and error routine.

Is there a tutorial to show how to print what i want the first time (or second) instead of a dozen wasted trial and error attempts?
